A popular food critic compared the Humber Royal Hotel in Grimsby to ‘Chernobyl’ when he first saw it – but he quickly wished he hadn’t.

Craig Harker, known as Dad Loves Food, was visiting town to try out some of the food on offer such as Beast Burger, Joella’s and Dough Bros at Freeman Street Market.

However, after seeing the exterior and being less than impressed, he was pleasantly surprised with what the interior of the hotel – which was recently taken over – had to offer.

Likewise, the reviewer was very impressed with the breakfast that was offered to him the next morning.

On a post on his social media, Craig said: “Staying at the Chernobyl hotel tonight”, along with a photo of the hotel from outside

Craig Harker, also known as Dad Loves Food, stayed overnight at the Humber Royal while in Grimsby and even ate their breakfast.

However, he later added “Whoa, the interior is really nice! Clean and tidy”.

Others compared the hotel to the Bates Motel from the horror movie Psycho while others simply said it looked like an old office building or even their school from the 1970s.

Appearances can be deceptive, as Craig discovered after entering the hotel. He said: “Honestly, the outside of the hotel is nothing like the inside. Apparently they were renovated a few years ago.”

In addition, the famous gourmet tried the breakfast offered at the hotel, which did not disappoint him.

Craig explained, “Despite arriving 10 minutes after stopping the service, the chef still agreed to make something for me. No sausage or black pudding, but I was just grateful she made the meal. Most breakfasts.

Surprisingly, it’s absolutely perfect! Good quality, well-done bacon, a lightly fried, slightly crispy patty, and the appropriate Heinz beans on the plate.

“The mushroom was soaked in butter (as I like it) and scrambled eggs mixed with the whites and yolks so you could see the pieces. Everything was clean with no fat on the plate.”

“I too had already eaten two croissants.

“The hotel from the outside looks very old fashioned and something out of a 60’s movie, but inside the renovation is brilliant and I would definitely stay there again.”

The Humber Royal declined to comment on the review.

A town in the Riverina is coming together to buy a pub, and they hope others in the area will join in the ‘Australian dream’. The community of Grong Grong is working on the purchase of the Royal Hotel, establishing a fixed unit trust. The team behind the initiative is raising capital by calling for investment blocks of $ 5,000. Their final goal? To make it a destination as part of their journey to rebuild the city. Cain Gawne, a resident of Grong Grong, said he knew nothing of what had been done before. He said the current owners moved here two years ago and were looking to sell it, adding that a common talking point was that a local should buy it. “So we decided why we shouldn’t buy it,” Gawne said. “We want people here, in Wagga, and even in Newcastle, Sydney and Melbourne to buy a share because it’s part of the great Australian dream of owning a pub.” You can buy a $ 5,000 block as a share. as an individual or in a group, then it is led by a board of directors made up of the five co-founding members, then five representatives voted. have raised sufficient capital. The plan is to start renovations immediately and create a family environment that still feels like a real country pub. Mr. Gawne said the keyword is “destination”. “To support a pub in a small town, the population of Grong Grong is only around 250, you need a cohesive business,” he said. “The goal is to make it a destination so that you can support coming from out of town, especially the people who helped buy it in the first place. “You can patronize your own pub.” Mr. Gawne said Grong Grong is a “unique city” with a large group of inhabitants. “The best thing is the community spirit and the people there,” he said. “It’s a rare opportunity, and we would like to see everyone jump on board. ”For more information on the initiative, click here. The scaffolding around the Royal Hotel Kew has officially fallen after more than three months of construction. The hotel is undergoing extensive renovations under the watchful eyes of Managers Scott Coman, Hotel Consultant Lee-Ann Paige, Manager / Builder Brad Baker and Manager / Plumber Brent Baker. The renovation has already yielded some historic surprises with pennies found in cracked floorboards and 1925 newspapers dug up in the walls, according to Mr Coman. Read more: Kew Royal Hotel set to undergo renovations in 2021 in a nod to history “We found some Sydney Morning Heralds from 1925 and will frame them to have them in the bar. We found some old pennies wedged between the planks and the hotel’s original rear window before it was enlarged, “he said.” We finished the bar, installed a new faucet, a brass handrail and a cabinet . There is new furniture throughout the hotel, the beer garden will be a big part of the hotel and we are also opening a take out window for coffee and breakfast. Read more: Why pubs countryside became popular property during the pandemic. “We hope to have screenings on Sundays in the beer garden and we are planning to host events on the grass like having an outdoor screen for children’s movie nights. L ‘one of our first events will hopefully be , Oktoberfest this year. “We stay on the heritage theme of a country pub and go for a gourmet venue. The chefs will play a pretty big role in the future of this hotel. We should be done in about five or six weeks by early October, let’s hope so. .” The building was originally known as “The Stables” in 1891 and was owned by George Perkins, according to documents released by the Kendall Heritage Society. The hotel provided a vital staging post for horses pulling coaches from Taree to Port Macquarie during the 1800s. The last coach service left Taree northbound on February 31, 1913. The residents of Lake Cathie, Rick Rouland and Brett Mahoney, said the hotel refurbishment brought them back after many years. “The exterior looks good, it looks very neat and tidy now. It was a bit run down before, but the older style bar is pretty cool now,” Mr. Rouland said. “We haven’t been here for a long time, but it’s interesting to see what the new owners are up to. We would go now if they have a good stream, live music from out of town artists.” The first beer was served at the hotel in October 1894 after a liquor license was granted the same year. The property was owned by George Perkins and Mary Ann Adkins in 1895, it was extended and renovated in 1898 before being sold to Henry Forster. The hotel was sold on several occasions and subsequently bought by Mrs. Eliza Greig in 1924. A stroke of bad luck saw the hotel partially burnt down in 1925, rebuilt in 1926, sold to Samuel Myer Mendelson in 1927 and set on fire again in 1940 Our reporters work hard to provide local and up-to-date news to the community. The owners of the Royal Hotel have obtained a Heritage Modification Permit for the exterior renovations of the iconic Fernie Building.

At the last Fernie Town Council meeting, councilors unanimously approved the permit application, which will allow homeowners to add an addition to the roof, build an elevator / shaft addition staircase and make changes to the exterior form and character of the existing building.

The permit is for changes outside the building. Interior work will be governed by other permits.

According to Fernie Town Planning Director Derek Cimolini, staff concluded that the changes did not have a negative impact and that a review by a heritage consultant found that the proposed work did not remove no heritage value.

According to City documents, the heritage professional who assessed the proposed additions concluded that “the modifications made to the exterior of the building, including the three additions, do not remove the heritage value of the character-defining elements… and the heritage character of the building as a whole. The proposed adaptive reuse design of the Development Permit (Heritage Modification Permit) meets the conservation intervention requirements of the Royal Hotel as a designated municipal heritage site.

The Royal Hotel continues to undergo renovations, the interior of the building being cleared to make room for the changes desired by the owners, who transform it into a “Boutique Hotel”.

A surge of interest in regional hotel real estate from metropolitan investors helped spur the sale of two Armidale pubs over the past week. First, the Whitebull Hotel sold for a record high price of $ 13.25 million, and now it has been announced that the Royal Hotel has sold for over $ 5 million. The off-market sale was handled by HTL Property, which said the sellers were a union of local businessmen with diverse backgrounds including accounting and construction. General manager Andrew Jolliffe said he has transacted more than $ 40 million in hotel assets in the New England area over the past month, with more sales to be announced in the coming weeks. “I think the internal market has turned a bit inward because the borders have been closed and people have gone to regional areas to relax and reconnect with those areas,” Mr. Jolliffe. “It gave them some confidence to turn those recreational thoughts into business investing thoughts.” There has been an “extraordinary increase” in the number of metropolitan-based investors willing to invest regionally, according to Jolliffe. “We always had a handful, but now we have a lot more,” he said. “We believe the paths that have been trodden well over the past 18 months will maintain regional interest in pubs and housing as attractive investment assets for capital domiciled in metropolitan areas.” The Roche family will retain all current management and staff and say it will be ‘business as usual’ at the Royal. “There are no immediate plans for major changes in the business,” said Dominic Roche, executive chairman of the Roche group. “However, we will seek to improve the overall hotel offering with a more food and beverage-focused operation, and management synergies and operational expertise from our group’s larger hotel operations.” CLICK HERE TO RECEIVE EMAILS CONTAINING THE BEST LOCAL NEWS AND STORIES AS WELL AS OUR NEWS ALERTS Mr. Joliffe said other factors as well as “highly desirable returns” in regional areas are driving sales. “Increased regional migration, regional infrastructure spending, lower sensitivity to lockdown measures related to COVID-19; and a strong rural economy driven by agriculture are all major drivers of positive sentiment in the regional hotel space, ”he said. “These major transactions bear witness to a vigorous investor appetite for quality assets in large regional cities.” Our reporters work hard to provide local and up-to-date news to the community. Grimsby’s Humber Royal Hotel is under new ownership following a major deal with a guide price of £ 1.9million.

The new owner is a private buyer with hotel experience and aims to keep the 58-room venue as hotel accommodation.

It also has five reception and conference rooms that have hosted weddings, birthdays, receptions and a premier.

Theresa May was greeted in Grimsby at the Humber Royal Hotel when the Tory North East Lincolnshire Council group became the governing administration in 2019.

It was the same year that the Grimsby Telegraph Heart of Your Community Awards were held at the Humber Royal.

Kevin Clifton and Stacey Dooley were also greeted shortly after winning the 2018 Strictly Championship.

The hotel has also hosted comic book conventions and guest speakers, including BBC Radio Four presenter James Naughtie.

Thousands of school children enjoyed their Prom Nights at this luxury venue, which also hosted sports dinners, with guests including former England manager Kevin Keegan and Harry Redknapp.

The lottery winners were also announced there by Camelot.

Almost 10 years ago there were controversial hotel expansion plans that were widely criticized by residents living nearby.

It was sold to a private buyer for an undisclosed price, after being marketed on behalf of Downing LLP by hotel industry specialist Colliers.

The Links and Fairway Suites are located on the first floor, and on the ground floor is the Humber Suite and the Royal Terrace which combine to form the Royal Suite.

Video conferencing, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs are available, and the Humber Suite has a large screen and ceiling-mounted projector with built-in sound system.

The four-star hotel was closed for more than six months during the lockdown.

The freehold hotel sits on 2.7 acres, and Colliers’ senior surveyor Robert Smithson said the site’s substantial size and location in a predominantly residential area next to the Grimsby Golf Club had prompted the interest from a variety of potential buyers.

“The Humber Royal’s prime location meant that it was of interest not only to hoteliers but also to residential developers and developers of facilities such as nursing homes,” he said.

“However, it will now continue to be run as a hotel under the management of the new owner, who is an experienced hotelier. Given its impressive range of reception suites and bar facilities, it will undoubtedly continue to attract trade in local businesses as well as trade in events such as weddings.

The Humber Royal Hotel in Grimsby was bought out, nine months after it went on the market.

A deal was made for the 58-room hotel – with no intended change of use as the buyer is already in the business.

They have yet to be revealed as they rushed for the five-story property located on 2.7 acres next to the Grimsby Golf Club.

Colliers’ lead surveyor Robert Smithson said the site’s substantial size and location in a predominantly residential area has attracted interest from a variety of potential buyers.

“The Humber Royal’s prime location meant that it was of interest not only to hoteliers but also to residential developers and developers of facilities such as nursing homes,” he said.

“However, it will now continue to be run as a hotel under the management of the new owner, who is an experienced hotelier.

“Given its impressive range of reception suites and bar facilities, it will no doubt continue to attract the trade of local businesses as well as the trade in events such as weddings.”

It was released to the market in November on behalf of investment firm Downing LLP in a year when the pandemic wreaked havoc on the hospitality industry.

A new management company had been set up a few months earlier.

The hotel, which has five conference and meeting rooms, an open-plan lounge bar and a restaurant overlooking the golf course, had been rescued from administration in 2010 by Icon Hotels Ltd, with a £ 1.75million overhaul completed on what used to be the Elizabeth Hotel.

It comes after the Humber Bridge Country Hotel in Barton closed after being placed in receivership. Formerly known as The Reeds Hotel, it was inundated in 2013 by an abnormal tidal wave and never returned to profitability, changing hands in 2020.

A new buyer is looking to develop a caravan park there.

A historic Bideford hotel is eager to welcome locals and guests again as the lockdown ends to experience its new exterior look, the newly discovered dining floor, and stunning bedrooms.

The staff at the Royal Hotel, which dates back to the 17th century, have been busy during the pandemic period restoring some of the hotel’s forgotten features.

The Royal’s maintenance team painstakingly repainted the exterior of the hotel, revealing incredible decorative details, including a coat of arms dating back centuries.

Gazette editor-in-chief Joe Bulmer sat down with Brend Hotels manager Richard Brend last week to find out what’s new at the Royal.

“About 75% of the windows needed to be replaced, we have repainted the exterior of the hotel several times, but this time we gave it a real makeover,” said Richard.

The gorgeous floor unearthed in the hotel’s atmospheric dining room turns out to be a bit of a mystery. The building has a history steeped in history, initially being used as a merchant’s mansion when it was built in 1688.

“The restaurant area was once used as a yard and stable,” adds Richard. “We don’t know where the beautiful soil comes from.”

Richard and his team are currently busy preparing to end the current Covid-19 restrictions and are eager to host a number of weddings that have had to be postponed due to the pandemic.

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. – Demolition is underway for the Old Royal Hotel. The crews ensure that the collapsing structure is safely demolished.

City officials say bricks started falling from the old hotel in May. But last week, a policeman noticed signs of another collapse, which made the demolition of the structure much more urgent.

The city said the building had been vacant for more than 20 years. Decades of neglect caused water damage due to a leaking roof, which ultimately made the building unstable.

Demolition of the structure costs the city approximately $ 160,000 and will take two to three weeks to complete and clean up.

“It’s an incredibly slow process as we have to worry about the safety of people around us, as well as the safety of personal property,” said Melinda Mehaffy, director of economic development for the city. “It’s very intentional. When Dean Demolition destroys a building, they’re very intentional about where they’re hitting, what they’re doing, and how they’re doing it. So we are working on this process.

The city planned to place a lien on the property to eventually recover the costs of demolition from an owner. Mehaffy said the current owner spent the last year claiming historic building tax credits in an attempt to save the structure.

Mehaffy also said the brick was about three or four feet thick on the exterior walls. The demolition company has focused on salvaging bricks and other materials that can be sold.

About eight people living nearby were temporarily evacuated to the Elms Hotel.
