Food critic compares the Humber Royal to ‘Chernobyl’ – but picks it up when he walks inside

A popular food critic compared the Humber Royal Hotel in Grimsby to ‘Chernobyl’ when he first saw it – but he quickly wished he hadn’t.

Craig Harker, known as Dad Loves Food, was visiting town to try out some of the food on offer such as Beast Burger, Joella’s and Dough Bros at Freeman Street Market.

However, after seeing the exterior and being less than impressed, he was pleasantly surprised with what the interior of the hotel – which was recently taken over – had to offer.

Likewise, the reviewer was very impressed with the breakfast that was offered to him the next morning.

On a post on his social media, Craig said: “Staying at the Chernobyl hotel tonight”, along with a photo of the hotel from outside

Craig Harker, also known as Dad Loves Food, stayed overnight at the Humber Royal while in Grimsby and even ate their breakfast.

However, he later added “Whoa, the interior is really nice! Clean and tidy”.

Others compared the hotel to the Bates Motel from the horror movie Psycho while others simply said it looked like an old office building or even their school from the 1970s.

Appearances can be deceptive, as Craig discovered after entering the hotel. He said: “Honestly, the outside of the hotel is nothing like the inside. Apparently they were renovated a few years ago.”

In addition, the famous gourmet tried the breakfast offered at the hotel, which did not disappoint him.

Craig explained, “Despite arriving 10 minutes after stopping the service, the chef still agreed to make something for me. No sausage or black pudding, but I was just grateful she made the meal. Most breakfasts.

Surprisingly, it’s absolutely perfect! Good quality, well-done bacon, a lightly fried, slightly crispy patty, and the appropriate Heinz beans on the plate.

“The mushroom was soaked in butter (as I like it) and scrambled eggs mixed with the whites and yolks so you could see the pieces. Everything was clean with no fat on the plate.”

“I too had already eaten two croissants.

“The hotel from the outside looks very old fashioned and something out of a 60’s movie, but inside the renovation is brilliant and I would definitely stay there again.”

The Humber Royal declined to comment on the review.
