A historic Bideford hotel is eager to welcome locals and guests again as the lockdown ends to experience its new exterior look, the newly discovered dining floor, and stunning bedrooms.

The staff at the Royal Hotel, which dates back to the 17th century, have been busy during the pandemic period restoring some of the hotel’s forgotten features.

The Royal’s maintenance team painstakingly repainted the exterior of the hotel, revealing incredible decorative details, including a coat of arms dating back centuries.

Gazette editor-in-chief Joe Bulmer sat down with Brend Hotels manager Richard Brend last week to find out what’s new at the Royal.

“About 75% of the windows needed to be replaced, we have repainted the exterior of the hotel several times, but this time we gave it a real makeover,” said Richard.

The gorgeous floor unearthed in the hotel’s atmospheric dining room turns out to be a bit of a mystery. The building has a history steeped in history, initially being used as a merchant’s mansion when it was built in 1688.

“The restaurant area was once used as a yard and stable,” adds Richard. “We don’t know where the beautiful soil comes from.”

Richard and his team are currently busy preparing to end the current Covid-19 restrictions and are eager to host a number of weddings that have had to be postponed due to the pandemic.

“Business has been good. We’re busy, that’s the main thing. The restrictions limit us a bit but overall we are happy, ”he explained.

“We took care of our residential guests during the pandemic period and many weddings had to be postponed. We look forward to a busy rest of the year.

“We are perfect for a medium sized wedding, we can even hold the ceremony in one of our historic rooms. We also have the Royal Bridge Gardens for wedding photoshoots.

“We would love to welcome our locals for a meal and a few drinks, we have a very large choice of food for lunch and dinner and a lot of people haven’t come since our makeover.”
