Giggs jury says incidents such as Dubai hotel row with girlfriend were ‘regular’

Former Manchester United footballer Ryan Giggs told a jury that arguments with his partner, like the one he had in a Dubai hotel hallway, were a “regular” feature of their relationship.

Earlier he confirmed to Manchester Crown Court that he had always been unfaithful in his romantic relationships – but had never assaulted a woman.

Giggs began giving evidence in his defense on Tuesday, where he stands accused of assaulting his ex-partner Kate Greville, 38, and younger sister Emma Greville, 26, at his Greater Manchester home in Worsley, on November 1, 2020.

The 48-year-old is also accused of using controlling and coercive behavior against Kate Greville.

The former winger’s lawyer, Chris Daw QC, asked Giggs if he agreed he was “well known” around the world for being a footballer.

Mr Daw added: “But you are also known for something else, you have a reputation for infidelity. Is that reputation justified?

Giggs replied, “Yes.”

Moving on to the love life of the ex-Welsh international, Mr Daw asked: ‘During your relationships with women, up to and including Ms Greville, have you managed to be faithful to one of ‘between them?”

“No,” Giggs said.

The lawyer asked, “If an attractive woman has shown interest in you, regardless of your marital status, are you able to resist?”

Giggs replied, “No.”

He admitted he was a ‘flirt by nature’ and confirmed he had lied to his ex-wife Stacey and Ms Greville about his infidelities.

Moving on to the allegations for which he is on trial, Mr Daw asked: ‘Have you ever physically assaulted a woman?’

“No,” Giggs replied.

Mr. Daw continued: “Either November 1, 2020, or any other time?

Giggs repeated, “No.”

Mr Daw then asked: ‘Have you ever undertaken to control or coerce a woman in any way, or in the manner alleged by Ms Greville?’

Again, Giggs replied, “No.”

Mr Daw asked: ‘Did you make Kate Greville a slave to your every need and demand, as she described it?’ and Giggs replied, “I didn’t.”

Giggs told jurors about his early football days, training with Manchester City before being scouted by Sir Alex Ferguson aged 13 and playing for Manchester United’s first team as a teenager.

He opened up about meeting his ex-wife at a barbecue when he was 18, how they started a relationship in their late 20s, moved to Worsley and had two children.

Giggs said he had a “really good” relationship with his children but, when asked if he was faithful to his wife, Giggs replied, “No, I wasn’t.”

Around 2013-2014, he first met Ms Greville while she was working for a public relations firm employed to handle her business with Gary Neville.

“The first time I met Kate I was immediately attracted to her, I thought she was attractive, I thought she was smart, I thought she was funny,” he said. declared.

The couple, who were both married, then exchanged photos, including one of them in a cropped sports top.

“I had never seen his body before,” Giggs said.

“It was the first time I knew she had abs. She was fit. I thought she looked hot.

They had sex for the first time the day before a planned photo shoot in London for Cafe Football.

Ms Greville was ‘unhappy’ in her marriage and left her husband ‘no more than six months’ after she and Giggs first slept together.

Giggs said he continued to stay at his family home with then-wife Stacey and their two children as the case continued.

He added that they “fell in love” but that he only moved “sometime later”.

Mr. Daw asked: “To cut to the chase, did you kind of want to have your cake and eat it?”

Giggs replied, “Yes.”

In the end, Giggs said it was a “news article where I was linked to Kate”, published in May 2016, which led to her departure – a decision he described as “tough”. “.

“She (Stacey) asked me about it. I denied it,” he said.

When asked if it was an amicable breakup with his ex-wife, he replied, “No, I would say difficult.”

In the summer of 2016, as Ms Greville was preparing to move to Abu Dhabi for a work opportunity, they discussed a relationship and decided to “make it work”.

He was asked about an incident at the Westin Hotel in Dubai in 2017, when Ms Greville claimed Giggs dragged her naked body across the floor of her hotel room before dumping her belongings in a hallway.

After “hit it off really well” that night, Giggs claimed things took a turn when he texted his daughter Libby.

“I just got a little pissed off because she (Kate) was pretty obviously showing that she was looking over my shoulder,” he added.

“It was like she didn’t believe it was Libby I was texting,” Giggs said, adding that when he “stormed off” to her hotel room, Ms Greville “l ‘followed’ and an argument began.

Giggs denied any “physical element” in the argument and said he started packing Ms Greville after telling her he didn’t want her to stay with him.

“I couldn’t close it (the suitcase) but I was leading her to the front door with the suitcase,” he said.

He said they were “halfway out”, between the hallway and the bedroom, before Ms Greville came inside with her luggage.

They later reconciled and “had sex that we would have quite often — which could get pretty rough, but not anything weird, but just hard,” Giggs said.

He added that they were “regularly messaging each other about what we were going to do.”

Asked by Mr Daw if the incident was unusual in their ‘roller coaster’ relationship, Giggs replied: ‘It wasn’t unusual but I wouldn’t say it was regular.’

Ms Greville has been appointed to a £100,000-a-year PR job for GG Hospitality, co-owned by Giggs and former United team-mate Gary Neville, and specifically to organize PR for the launch of their new initiative, the Stock Exchange hotel and restaurant.

Around the same time in January 2019, Giggs was interviewed and landed his “dream job” as manager of the Wales football team.

Giggs was then quizzed on how the pair would row and then ‘hang out’, with the ex-footballer saying ‘it was immature’ but denying it was an effort to control Ms Greville.

Giggs replied: “It was just a joke between me and Kate.

“Just dancing embarrassingly, something that wasn’t in his nature, acting stupid at a Christmas party.”

He told the court he had ‘never’ shared any private photos or videos of Ms Greville.

Jurors earlier heard how, in a prepared statement, Giggs told detectives that his ‘head had collided’ with his girlfriend’s during a ‘fight’ over a cellphone at his home, but that the hit was “not deliberate”.
