Hotel Del Coronado | Architect magazine

Project description

Wimberly Interiors had the honor of leading a transformative renovation for San Diego’s iconic grande dame – the Hotel Del Coronado, affectionately known as “The Del”. Built in 1888 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977, Hotel Del Coronado is a living legend of American luxury hospitality, with historic Golden Age architecture, extraordinary sea views and loving guests. from the beach, including royalty, heads of state and war heroes. , celebrities and even ghosts.

The overall design of the Victorian building intentionally celebrates the history and heritage of this legendary seaside resort. Offering a fresh and luxurious take on the design’s heritage, Wimberly Interiors led an integrated team that included California-based architecture studio WATG who served as the official architect. The vision ensured that the public areas remained truly Victorian, with the original finishes remaining intact and focusing the design on improving and refreshing what exists in the hotel today.
Light – both natural and new – has been used strategically throughout the space through architectural and decorative fixtures to illuminate Victorian heritage. With a layered design approach inspired by classic elements but with a modern expression, palettes are lighter and brighter, but accents remain grounded in appropriate Victorian hues. The new spaces are fresh and relevant while remaining rooted in the rich history that graces The Del.
Working with renowned preservation firm Heritage Architecture and Planning, the design team painstakingly restored the hall’s signature Illinois white oak walls and floors to their original essence. The restoration has unveiled the true character of the wood, now with detailed grains and textures that showcase the history and beauty of this precious material.

As guests continue into the arrival space, they will find a reimagined historic fireplace that has been elegantly used as a backdrop for the concierge desk. And new reception desks which have been designed as a reproduction of the historic desks of years gone by. The desks feature a backdrop of historically inspired cabinetry and a creative and curated art installation of vintage Hotel Del Coronado room keys with vibrant green tassels.
While the Del Hotel has entertained icons such as Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe and Charles Lindbergh, it is everyday guests who have loved and adored this historic gem since 1888. Wimberly Interiors has captured that magic and created a photo gallery of real guests enjoying The Del, located along the main hallway leading to the Grand Ballroom. With these beloved guests in mind – Wimberly Interiors was designed with a vision to ensure the charm of the old is cherished, reinvented and celebrated in a modern, fresh and luxurious way.
