Windsor Regional Hospital and Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare reinstate no-visit policy

A no-visit policy will be reinstated at both Windsor Regional Hospital campuses as well as Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare starting Thursday due to an increase in COVID-19 cases.

As of 12:01 a.m. Thursday, both hospitals will no longer allow visitors with some exceptions.

“High patient volumes caused by both acute non-COVID health issues, infectious COVID-19 patients and recovered COVID-19 patients still requiring acute care as well as reduced bed capacity caused by suspected patients COVID-19 are challenging the entire regional health care system and we must do what we can to limit the possibilities for the spread of the COVID-19 virus,” said a WRH statement said.

The additional visiting restrictions at WRH come days after the hospital already implemented a no-visiting policy for patients who had confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19 on Sunday.

The hospital says the difficult decision was made as a precaution to keep patients, families and healthcare teams safe as transmission rates rise.

There are limited exceptions to the no-visitor policy, including:

  • The patient is a pediatrician (18 years of age or younger)
  • The patient is palliative or at the end of life
  • The patient is in labor
  • The patient has a life-changing or serious illness identified by the clinical team
  • Patient requires support person due to underlying condition i.e. dementia, mobility issues

The Hôtel Dieu Grace Healthcare policy does not apply to end-of-life patients in palliative care. Visiting guidelines for these patients remain unleashed.

HDGH plans to reinstate its Designated Care Partner (DCP) program which allows a fully trained individual, identified by the family or the patient, to enter the hospital as part of the patient’s care team.

WRH supports the use of technology to allow people to connect with loved ones in hospital through virtual options such as FaceTime or phone calls.
